| Water Polo Opportunities 2010-02-09
Water polo coaches are the focus of two exciting new developments in the ASA’s ongoing programme for aquatic education in England. The first ASA/UKCC Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Water Polo course will take place this Spring when a pilot group of water polo coaches will undertake the next step in extending their professional training and development. The course will then be available to all candidates later this year. Secondly, water polo coaches in England are invited to become the latest to benefit from the Advanced Coaching Offer, an ambitious coaching programme offered in conjunction with the ASA Talent Development team. The Advanced Coaching Offer will provide targeted support to up to 20 proactive, talented, developing water polo coaches across England over a four year period, with the initial intake being 8 coaches over the first two years. At absolutely no cost to the coach or club, the programme will provide coaches with the opportunity to shape their future in aquatic coaching with a structured programme of observation/analyses of coaching sessions, mentoring, one to one discussions, coaching at regional talent programmes and attendance at English talent camps. Colin Huffen, ASA Coaching Systems Manager is looking forward to an encouraging response: “This builds upon the huge success of the Advanced Coaching Offer for swimming coaches, launched last year, which was heavily over-subscribed. It’s great that we can now open up the Advanced Coaching Offer to another discipline which will help build the future success of our water polo coaches and their players.” He added; “To be able to simultaneously announce a key milestone in providing the Level 3 qualification is a real step forward in the support the ASA can offer to water polo coaches.” To be eligible for the Advanced Coaching offer, coaches must live in England, coach in a club environment for a minimum of three hours per week, hold the UKCC Level 1 Coaching Water Polo qualification (or equivalent), have an ongoing commitment to self improvement and be willing to support other coaches in the area. Interested parties should download and complete the Application Form by Friday 5th March 2010. Successful applicants will be contacted week commencing 8th March 2010. http://www.swimming.org/asa/news/teaching-and-coaching/exciting-developments-in-water-polo-coaching/2418/

| Swimnorthwest launch their Aquatic Training 2010-02-03
Swimnorthwest have launched their Aquatic Training and Youth Club Programme, a new access programme that will give swim21 accredited clubs in the Northwest the opportunity to access a 50m pool. The project, endorsed by Olympic bronze medallist Cassie Patten, will provide swimming clubs in the North West, who have achieved the ASA’s swim21 accreditation, the opportunity to access a 50m pool for training their swimmers on a monthly basis. The Aquatic Training and Youth Club Programme will provide clubs, swimmers and coaches with the experience of training in world class environments and hopefully demonstrating an improvement in performance at a national level. The project has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark which officially recognises outstanding non-commercial projects and events inspired by the Games. Director General of the Government Olympic Executive, Jeremy Beeton, visited the Manchester Aquatics Centre (MAC) to help launch the programme which will provide many clubs, swimmers and coaches with the opportunity to train in a world class environment and train like their Olympic heroes. Jeremy Beeton said “Manchester has a proud sporting history and is an excellent example of what can be achieved through hosting international sporting events. Today I have seen how the Centre, a 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp, provides world class facilities for elite athletes and community level sport; this is exactly what the Olympic Aquatic Centre will do. “Through projects like the swimnorthest Aquatic training Programme, local people in Greater Manchester are already becoming involved in 2012 by getting more active and being inspired by the Olympic values.” Olympic bronze medallist Cassie Patten said: “I think it’s such a great idea that people are working together to give young athletes more access to 50m pools. When I was younger I didn’t really get to swim in 50m pools that often and it is experience that would have been invaluable to me." “It is important for swimmers to become comfortable in 50m pools because there is a big difference when you go from swimming in 25m pools to the Olympic size pools. When these athletes go to regionals and nationals the experience will be very helpful to them and should help set them up for the future and potentially the Olympics.” Matt McFahn, Regional Director for Swimnorthwest, said: “As well as providing a great opportunity for young swimmers to experience swimming in top-level facilities, this project will provide Swimnorthwest with the opportunity to mentor coaches and identify talented swimmers. Hopefully we may see some of this young talent competing at the 2012 Games and beyond.” It is hoped that the programme can be extended to provide similar opportunities for synchronised swimming, water polo and diving clubs who need deep water to train

| BRITISH SWIMMING LAUNCH ‘INSPIRING’ VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME 2010-01-29
British Swimming is launching its new Volunteer Training Programme which has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark. The London 2012 Inspire Programme officially recognises outstanding non-commercial projects and events inspired by the Games. The aim of this programme is to provide volunteers with the opportunity to gain experience at national and international events to prepare them for applying for volunteer roles at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This will also help British Swimming to deliver an increased number of events at the highest level of delivery and support the Olympic and Paralympic Games with trained and experienced volunteers. Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games said; “The British Swimming Volunteer Training Programmeis encouraging volunteers within aquatics to fulfil their potential. I am proud that with the help of partners such as British Swimming we are delivering on our vision to use the power of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to boost participation in swimming and other aquatic events.” Rachel Washington, Operations Coordinator for British Swimming said; “We are delighted to have achieved the Inspire Mark for this project. This will give us a fantastic opportunity to develop our workforce of volunteers so they have the skill sets and experience required for volunteer roles at London 2012. It will allow us to provide the best trained volunteer workforce for Aquatics that we as an organisation can support.” The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are fast approaching and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) are starting to look at their sports specific volunteer requirements. The official London 2012 volunteer application process will open in 2010 and this recruitment, selection and appointment process is managed entirely by LOCOG. British Swimming do not have any decision making status within this recruitment process but through a new British Swimming Volunteer Training Programme are offering support, guidance and training to any volunteers that have the required skill set for the positions available in order to support their application. If you are interested in applying for the British Swimming Volunteer Training Programme it is not essential that you already have volunteering experience. The training programme will equip you with the skills you need to successfully fulfil roles at aquatic events. If you are interested in applying please click here to download an application form. If you have any questions regarding this project or the application process please email volunteerproject@swimming.org. http://www.swimming.org/britishswimming/get-involved/british-swimming-volunteer-training-programme/british-swimming-volunteer-training-programme/2152/

| GET QUALIFIED - NW Funding 2010-01-21
Get Qualified NW is a scheme for the whole of the North West Region. Get Qualified NW is funded by European Social Fund (ESF) and the Learning & Skills Council and administered by the University of Cumbria. Identify as many suitable candidates to apply for Get Qualified NW as this has real potential to help develop level 2 and level 3 coaches and places are limited. The project provides up to 60% funding (funding will only be given on the successful completion of the course!), but is capped at £200 for level 2 and £300 for level 3 courses. Coaches MUST be certificated before 1st July 2011 to release funding and due to the application process, time constraints, complexity of level 3 courses you need to be identifying these coaches now. Also the potential coach must be 19 yrs of age and NOT be in full time education. Places are not guaranteed they go through an internal process. The scheme is working with a number of sports (see attached form) and these will be the courses that are currently available. As sports are added etc I shall keep you updated. There is an online application form that individuals need to complete and submit which can be found on the link below. However, looking at the online form there are some things you need to be aware of. The individual needs to have booked onto the course and know the exact name of the course, the name of the training provider / National Governing Body and the exact dates and cost of the course. So I think that support using this form is needed. As a part of the scheme individuals are offered the opportunity to join Coach Web and a free mentoring scheme run by the National Skills Academy which will offer individual support for individual coaches (although this scheme is not running yet and is only for a percentage of coaches that are chosen, I am not sure how this works yet as it has not yet been set up). The mentoring scheme is funded through CIF just for your information. Please note that this scheme is for all coaches not just voluntary coaches but paid coaches also, but bear in mind that if coach’s club or employer has received over €200,000 ESF funds for anything across the board over the last 3 years they might not be eligible for funding. Whilst this isn’t a problem for clubs etc, it might be something you need to consider for coaches employed by your local authority. The University will follow this up with employers once individuals have applied.

| CUMBRIASPORT Announce Talent Athlete Fund 2010-01-07
Are you a high level sports performer based in Cumbria? Are you looking for additional funding to help meet the ever increasing costs of training and competing? If so the Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund may be able to help you. The Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund has been created as part of the sporting legacy of London 2012 to support Cumbria's most talented athletes. The fund is being supported by Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council and Allerdale Borough Council and is being administered by the Cumbria Sport Partnership. The Fund has been developed to assist those performers who are or who have the potential to achieve national and international recognition in their chosen sport. As such, the Fund has been divided into two streams; the Performance Fund is for athletes already competing at national or international level, and the Potential Fund is for those young athletes aspiring to perform at national and international level. Eddie Edge, Director at Cumbria Sport Partnership said, “I’m delighted to be able to officially launch the Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund. The funding provided by Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council and Allerdale Borough Council will really make a difference to the elite sports performers we have in Cumbria. It will hopefully help them take the next step in their sporting careers and catapult them to Olympic or Paralympic success at London 2012”. Brendan Jameson, Leader of South Lakeland District Council and Chair of the Cumbria 2012 Group added, “This is a real step forward for the talented sports performers of Cumbria, I’m sure the Fund will benefit those elite performers already operating at the highest levels, and also provide some much needed finance to those aspiring Cumbrian performers looking to get to the next level. I would urge all elite performers in Cumbria to have a look at the Cumbria Sport website and make an application”. | 50m Pool Training 2009-10-19
At a recent swimnorthwest “Meet the Team” meeting in Cheshire a request was made regarding access to 50m pool facilities to provide clubs with the opportunity to train their better swimmers in a long course environment. Matt McFahn is in discussions with the operators of the 50m pools in the region and am receiving a favourable response regarding accessing pool time on either Saturday or Sunday early evenings on a once per month basis. Before he is able to progress further he needs to gauge the interest from clubs who would like to take advantage of training in a 50m pool. The estimate cost will be between £40-£50 per lane for two hours. If you would be interested in accessing this 50m pool offer, please can you contact Diane Stafford – swimnorthwest Office Administrator on diane.stafford@swimming.org.uk or call on 0161 953 2671 before 6th November 2009. Please provide details how frequently you would like to access this offer, how many lanes you require and the duration you would prefer (one or two hours) on each occasion.
